The Wall at the Edge of the Eye

I heard it in someone else’s kitchen.

“Good luck. It’d be easier to invent a new color.”

A throwaway line, the way you’d say when pigs fly. Worn smooth from use. It had clearly been said in that house a hundred times before and nobody turned their head. The conversation moved on without it.

I didn’t.

Some part of me had already taken the assignment before I decided whether I wanted it. Invent a new color. All right. Let me try.

I want to tell you what actually happens when you try, because it isn’t what you’d expect. It isn’t difficulty. Difficulty would be a relief: difficulty means there’s a door and you’re working the lock. What happens instead is quieter and much stranger. You reach for something and your hand closes on what you already had.

You start with the obvious moves. Something between red and violet. No, that’s magenta, you’ve seen it your whole life. Brighter, then. Brighter than white? There is no brighter than white. White is the ceiling and you cannot push through a ceiling made out of your own eyes. Darker than black is the same wall at the other end. So you try to combine. A green that is also red, not brown, not olive, both at once, held together. And your mind does something almost embarrassing. It flickers. Green, then red, then green again, like being handed two objects and asked to hold one.

Shapes arrive. Textures arrive. Something almost comes through, and then you look at it directly and it’s a color you saw on a car once.

That is the wall. Not effort defeated. Effort with nothing to push against.

I sat with that for a while, and then something worse occurred to me.

Suppose it had worked. Suppose a genuinely new color had arrived, unannounced, from outside everything I had ever seen. How would I know?

What would I check it against? Every judgment available to me would be made with equipment built out of the exact thing the new color was supposed to be outside of. No ruler. No name. Nothing to hold it against except more of what I already had. So the wall is not only that I can’t manufacture a new color; it’s that I have no way to recognize one. I am inside something, and the inside is the only vantage point I get.

You can feel around the edges of this. That’s most of what the attempt is, feeling around edges. But the edges don’t feel like edges. They feel like the world simply ending, the way the horizon isn’t a wall but you still can’t walk past it.

And then the question that actually started this book, which was not about color at all:

Where else have I hit this?

Because I recognized it. That specific sensation of reaching with everything I had and finding the reach itself was the limit; I had felt that before. Not often. But I knew it. It’s the feeling that shows up at the far end of the questions that matter most, the ones people have been asking as long as there have been people to ask. Why is there anything. What are we for. What happens after. I had always assumed those questions were hard. Standing in that kitchen I started to wonder whether some of them were hard in this other way, not unanswered but structurally closed, walled off by the shape of the thing doing the asking.

So I did what I imagine a lot of people are doing now. I asked a machine.

I wanted to know whether it could invent a new color. I half expected it to say yes, and I was ready to be jealous.

What it said was that it couldn’t, but for the opposite reason. It has no color at all. No red, no blue, no field that appears when it closes its eyes, because there are no eyes and nothing that closes. What it has instead is reach. It can describe hues outside our gamut, build higher-dimensional color spaces, name relational properties no human being has ever felt, and reason clearly about what those properties would mean for a creature equipped to feel them. It can redraw the map in any direction. It has simply never stood anywhere on it.

I read that answer three times.

Two minds. Two failures. Not the same failure.

I can’t leave the room I’m in. It has never been in a room. I have the inside of the thing and no way out. It has the whole outside and no way in.

That asymmetry is what this book is about.

Mathematicians have a name for a space that curves back into itself, a space where you can travel in any direction forever and never reach an edge, because there isn’t one, because the space simply doesn’t extend that way. They call it a closed manifold. I don’t think it’s a metaphor. I think it’s a description, and I think we live in one, and I think almost everything strange about being a person follows from that fact.

So I went looking for the rest of the wall.

The Classic Challenge

The first thing I did was start asking other people.

Partly this was cowardice. If I was going to be defeated by a sentence somebody said while reaching for a coffee cup, I wanted company. But there was also a real reason, and it took a while before I understood what it was.

One person failing at something proves nothing. Maybe I am slow. Maybe I was tired. Maybe there is a trick to it and I never learned the trick. But if a great many people fail, and more than that, if they fail in the same handful of ways, then you are not looking at a great many personal shortcomings. You are looking at the shape of something they have in common.

So this chapter is about the ways people fail, because the failures are more informative than any success would be.

And I have to be careful here in a way that shapes the whole chapter, so let me do it at the top rather than burying it.

What follows is a taxonomy, not a study. I have asked this question of friends, of family, of people at tables where the conversation had gone quiet, and I have watched what came back. That is not fieldwork. It is anecdote with an interested party doing the collecting, and an interested party collecting anecdote is how people convince themselves of things. I have not run a protocol, I have not counted, and I am not going to tell you that some percentage of some sample did some thing, because I would be making the numbers up and you would have no way to catch me.

What I am going to do instead is tell you exactly what I think you will find, and then hand you the question so you can go and find it.

That is a weaker claim than a study. It is also a stronger anchor, because you do not have to take my word for any of it. A sample of forty is something you trust me about. A prediction you can test at dinner tonight is something you check.

If the prediction is wrong, it is wrong in your kitchen, in front of you, and this chapter goes down first.

The moves

Ask someone to invent a new color and watch what happens in the first ten seconds. My prediction is that almost everyone reaches for one of six things.

The mix. I expect this to be the most common by a wide margin. “A reddish green.” “Blue mixed with orange.” “Purple but also yellow.” People go straight for combination, because combination is how new things usually get made, and because it feels like it ought to work. It does not. What comes back is either a color you already know, which is what happens with blue and orange, or nothing at all, which is what happens with red and green. I will get to why those two cases come apart in the next chapter, because the reason is specific and physical and it explains something about your own head that I found genuinely startling.

The extreme. “Brighter than white.” “Darker than black.” “Redder than red.” This one is interesting because it is a sophisticated instinct. The person has correctly noticed that color has axes, and they are trying to run past the end of one. But you cannot exceed white by pushing harder on white. There is no more of it. The scale stops, and it does not stop like a road stops, with a barrier and a view of what is past it. It stops the way counting stops when you run out of numbers you know.

The borrow. “A color that tastes like copper.” “Something that sounds violet.” People reach into another sense entirely, which is a lovely move and tells you they understand the assignment is asking for something outside the box. But nothing arrives. What arrives is a phrase. The phrase is evocative, it might be good in a poem, and it contains no color.

The name. Somebody eventually just names it. “Okay, it is called skell.” Then they sit there. Because the name is free and the thing is not, and everybody in the room can hear the difference immediately, including the person who said it. Watch for how fast that registers on the face of the person who did it. That speed is the interesting part, and it is the part I would want measured if anybody ever measured this properly.

The dodge. “Ultraviolet.” “Infrared.” “The colors bees see.” This is the smartest wrong answer and it deserves respect, because it is true that those wavelengths exist and true that we cannot see them. But that is the point, not the escape from it. Naming a wavelength you cannot experience is not producing a color; it is producing a coordinate. I can tell you exactly where a note sits on a piano I have never heard. The coordinate is real. The note stays silent.

The claim. Occasionally someone will say they did it. I want to be careful here, because I do not think these people are lying, and I think something genuinely happened to them. The question is what. My prediction, and this is the one I would most like somebody to test against me, is that when you ask what it was like, the description resolves into something already in the room. It was very bright. It shimmered. It was sort of gold but not gold. But I want to be careful about what that prediction is worth, because Chapter Thirteen eventually concludes it is worth less than I first thought. An account made of familiar material is what you would get whether or not anything happened, since familiar material is the only vocabulary anybody has. So the wording proves nothing either way.

What would matter is a capacity rather than an account: somebody who can then make a colour discrimination they could not make before, checked by a person who does not want the result. That would be a serious problem for this book, and I say more about it in Chapter Twenty-Eight, where I list the things that would break it.

The seventh thing

And then there is the one that is not a move at all.

Some people just stop.

They do not offer a mix or an extreme or a name. They go quiet, and the quiet has a specific quality that I have come to think is the most important thing in this chapter. It is not the silence of somebody searching. You can tell the difference. Searching has a texture: the eyes move, the head tilts, there is a rhythm to it, the person is clearly rummaging through something and will report back. This is different. This is somebody who has already arrived somewhere and found it empty.

I am describing a thing I believe I have seen and cannot demonstrate to you in print. Take it as a thing to watch for rather than a thing established. But if you run this on enough people I think you will find it, and I think you will know it when it happens, because it is not subtle once you are looking.

What I would add is this. Once you can recognize that silence you start seeing it underneath the six moves as well. The moves are what people do instead of the silence. They are not attempts at the answer. They are attempts to have something to say.

I do not mean that unkindly. I did all six of them myself, in order, in about ninety seconds, standing in a kitchen. The moves are what a mind does when it has been handed a request it cannot decline and cannot fill.

The control

Here is the experiment that convinced me this was worth a book, and it costs nothing to run, and unlike everything above it does not depend on me at all. You can do it at dinner tonight and you will have your answer before the plates are cleared.

Ask somebody to invent a new animal.

They will do it instantly. Not slowly, not with strain, instantly, and then they will keep going. It has six legs and it is translucent and it breathes through its skin and it lives in the upper canopy and it is the size of a dog but folds up like an umbrella and its young are born already knowing how to sing. People will build you a whole taxonomy if you let them. They enjoy it. They embellish. They come back an hour later with more.

Now ask the same person, in the same mood, at the same table, for a new color.

That contrast is the whole argument and I want to be very clear about what it isolates. It is the same person. The same imagination. The same willingness to play. The same five seconds of effort. If the problem were creativity, both requests would fail together, or both would succeed together. They do not. One is effortless and close to infinite and the other is a wall.

So creativity is not the variable. Something else is.

The animal works because animals are made of parts you already have. Legs, skin, wings, size, texture, behavior. You are recombining a large inventory, and the inventory is large enough that recombination feels like invention. It even is invention, in every sense that matters for a dinner table. Nobody has ever seen that animal.

The color fails because a color is not made of parts. It is a part. You have been handed a small closed set of them and asked to produce a new member, and there is nothing to recombine, because you are already at the bottom. The animal request lets you play with the pieces. The color request asks you to manufacture a piece.

That is the distinction the entire book runs on, and you can demonstrate it to a skeptic in under a minute with no equipment, no training, and no reason to trust the author.

I want to flag how much weight that last clause carries. Chapter Seven is going to make you a promise about what in this book you have to take from me and what you can check without me. The animal and the color is the first item on the checkable side, and it is deliberately the first real thing I have handed you.

The people who should be able to

The obvious objection is that I have been asking the wrong people. Ordinary people, tired people, people at parties. Surely somebody trained differently would get further.

Three groups are worth thinking about, and one of them is not my observation at all, which is why I trust it most.

Artists. People who have spent thirty years mixing pigment, who can name forty greens and see the difference between two whites at ten paces. I predict they fail faster than anybody, and with more certainty, and that they mostly skip the six moves and go straight to the seventh. The reasoning is not mysterious: somebody who has genuinely explored a space is the first to tell you where its edges are. This is a prediction and I want it marked as one, because it is also exactly what I want to be true. Chapter Thirteen turns this into a diagnostic step and Chapter Twenty-Eight admits what is wrong with my having done that.

Children. The story we tell about children is that their imaginations are unfenced, and for animals and monsters and worlds they are, wildly. I expect a new animal from a seven-year-old to take a while and be excellent. I expect a new color to produce the same six moves in miniature, possibly with more irritation, and I would take the irritation as the most honest response anybody gives. Again: prediction. I would very much like to be told I am wrong about this one, because children are where an unfenced imagination would show up if it existed anywhere.

Synesthetes. These are the people whose senses genuinely cross-wire, for whom the letter A has a colour or Tuesday is green or a trumpet is a shape. If anyone were positioned to smuggle a new hue in through a side door it should be them.

I want to handle this one carefully, because I had it wrong, and wrong in my favour, and I would rather show you the correction than hand you the corrected version and say nothing.

What I wrote was that the colours arriving through those unusual channels are ordinary colours: unusual wiring, standard-issue paint. That is not what the literature says.

Ramachandran and Hubbard report a colourblind synesthete who sees numbers, in their words, tinged with hues he otherwise cannot perceive, and who calls them Martian colours. The name is his. The proposed mechanism is cross-activation further along the visual system, producing colour experience while bypassing the stages where his deficiency sits, which is precisely the sort of route that could in principle deliver something the front end cannot.

I want to be exact about the strength of that, because it would be easy to swing too far the other way now that I have swung once already. It is one case. Ramachandran and Hubbard say we believe the cross-activation explanation, which is their hedge and not mine. And tinged is a smaller word than a new primary would require.

So this is the closest thing to a counterexample in this book, and I had it filed as a confirmation.

Here is what I think it shows, and I am now the one shaping it, so weigh it accordingly. The test that matters, and Chapter Thirteen argues this at length, is not what somebody reports but what they can subsequently do. A colourblind synesthete reporting Martian colours still cannot sort objects by a wavelength his retina does not register. No capacity comes back with him. What he has is an internally generated experience with no external referent and no way for anybody, including him, to check it against anything.

Which does not mean nothing happened. It means we have arrived at the recognition problem from three chapters ahead of schedule, in the one population best placed to break my argument, and the honest verdict is that the case is open.

Whatever is fixed here is fixed further down than the routing.

What the pattern would be evidence of

So suppose the prediction holds. Suppose you run this and you get what I think you will get.

Then you have people of different ages and trainings and temperaments, asked a question with no stakes and no wrong answers, in a friendly setting, with every incentive to be inventive. They produce a small number of recognizable failure modes and one silence. Expertise does not help. Youth does not help. Unusual neurology does not help. And every single one of them can invent an animal without breaking stride.

That is not a story about imagination. Imagination is working fine; you just watched it produce a translucent six-legged canopy-dweller in four seconds.

It is a story about what imagination is made of.

Whatever the visual system hands up to be imagined with is a fixed set. Everybody gets the same set, which is why the failures rhyme. The set is small enough to be exhausted quickly, which is why the people who know the territory best hit the wall first. And it sits below the level where wiring and training and personality operate, which is why nothing about a person’s particular mind changes the result.

I find this genuinely odd to sit with. We are used to limits that vary. Some people are stronger, faster, better at languages, better at holding a tune. This one does not vary. It is the same wall in the same place for the painter and the seven-year-old and the person who sees Thursday in green.

And if it does vary, if you find a group where it comes apart, that is a real finding and it is against me, and I would rather you go looking for it than take the chapter on trust.

Which raises the question I actually wanted answered, and it is the only thing I want to carry into the next chapter.

If the wall is that uniform, it is not in anybody’s mind.

It is in the equipment.
